AN ACCRINGTON medical centre is investigating claims that sensitive patient information was openly discussed in nearby pubs.
Mother-of-two Louise Campbell claims that staff at Peel House, based in the new Accrington Pals Health Centre on Paradise Street, were overheard talking about her health.
Louise, 24, who lives in Accrington, says the conversation included:
- Details about a miscarriage.
- Information regarding a sexually-transmitted infection.
- And full details of her name which can only be found on her medical records.
She said: "You’ve got no idea how humiliating it is to have people look at you in the pub when they know your most intimate secrets.
"On numerous occasions I have been into the Queens, the Calder and the Kings Arms in Accrington and had people come over to me to ask about my miscarriage.
"When I have asked them how they found out it comes back to the same people.
"This is a horrible situation because I can’t get away from it.
"If I go out people approach me and if I stay in my friends call me up and tell me what else has been said. I am mortified that this has happened to me.
"The one thing that makes me certain that all this information has come from the centre is the details of my name.
"I was christened as Anne Louise but I have only ever been known as Louise. Apart from my family the only other place that detail could be found is on my medical records.
"I hope the person who has spread these details loses their job because it’s unfair and unjust."
A friend of Louise, who does not wish to be named, said: "I have personally heard these people discussing her medical history and it just isn’t fair. She has been really upset by all the backlash from the comments.
"I am a patient at Peel House as well and to be honest I don’t ever want to step back inside in case they start on me.
"Louise hasn’t been their only target. Other people I know have been discussed as well as patients that I don’t."
Carol Pilkington, practice manager at Peel House, said: "The NHS takes all accusations of this nature very seriously and as a result it has an automatic dismissal procedure for anyone found breaching patient confidentiality.
"We have robust systems in place to protect both patients and employees and an investigation is now underway into these allegations."
