A MAN has undergone emergency surgery after being stabbed at a house on Water Street, Accrington.

The critically injured 33-year-old drove himself to Accrington Victoria Hospital for treatment on Tuesday night, where he was transferred to the Royal Blackburn Hospital and later to Blackpool Victoria Hospital for emergency surgery.

Yesterday his condition was described as serious but stable.

Police were called to the house at 8.50pm after a report of a serious assault at around 7pm.

Next door neighbour Neil McGregor, 45, said: "I heard a scuffle next door. It sounded like furniture was being thrown around.

"There was a lot of shouting."

Mr McGregor said six forensic experts visited the address in white suits on Wednesday morning, and an officer stood guard at the house all day.

Derek Turner, 77, who was staying at a house on Water Street, said: "When I got up in the morning I saw the officer outside. There has been a big police presence in the area."

Detective Inspector Steve Dowson from Accrington Police Station said: "We are treating this incident very seriously and a thorough investigation will now be carried out.

- POLICE yesterday (Thursday) charged a man in connection with a stabbing at an address on Water Street, Accrington. Richard Allan, 26, from Pinewood Drive, Accrington, has been charged with wounding with intent and was remanded to appear before Blackburn Magistrates yesterday (Thursday).
