A MAN believed to be in his 80s has been found dead in a gas-filled house in Baxenden.
The death of Donald Laraway, of Manchester Road, sparked a gas scare which led to the road being closed for several hours on Sunday.
Inspector Robert Campbell, operations manager at Lancashire Police, said: "We got a call from a friend of Mr Laraway who regularly visited him.
"She had gone to the house but got no answer.
"She walked to the rear of the property and saw him collapsed in the living room.
"The police were called and forced entry but the house was engulfed in gas. An officer tried to go in but he was stopped by the fumes.
"The Fire Brigade and Transco were called to secure the scene and it was found that the man was dead.
"The road was closed for around three hours and neighbouring homes were evacuated until they were cleared of gas."
It is not known how long Mr Laraway had been in the house or the cause of death but it is not being treated as suspicious.
Neighbour Eddie Blake said Mr Laraway was well liked and he was sad to hear of his death.
He said: "Donald was a nice guy. We used to see him walking by or going to the allotment he used to have around here, but this year I have hardly seen anything of him."
An inquest was due to be opened into Mr Laraway‘s death yesterday (Thurs-day).
