Police took to the streets of Oswaldtwistle on horses to clamp down on burglary and car crime.

They patrolled hotspot areas for crime and stopped and searched suspected offenders as part of Operation Spartacus which is running across Hyndburn, Ribble Valley and Blackburn with Darwen.

Sgt Tim McDermott said Lancashire Constabulary’s mounted branch carried out a successful initiative on Wednesday, July 25.

He said: "The horses provide a highly visible police presence in a community. They can help to prevent crime from occurring and provide extra reassurance to members of the public.

"They are another tactic that we are using in our fight against criminals. Burglary and car crime offences remain low and we will do all we can to keep it that way."

There are currently 18 horses working on the Constabulary’s Mounted Branch.

Each horse has its own stable and is named after a Lancashire town.

Horses named after places in East Lancashire include Downham, Belthorn, Darwen and Sawley.
