Police have issued a warning to ‘boy racer’ youths causing problems at a town centre supermarket.

Incidents of young motorists ‘doughnutting’ and ‘wheel spinning’ cars at the Tesco Extra car park on Eagle Street in Accrington have been reported to officers in recent weeks.

PC Dave Render said anyone caught committing offences will be prosecuted.

He said: “It’s getting beyond a joke now and they are tearing the car park up with their actions. They could cause serious injuries or a fatal road collision.

“When I spoke to the store manager he said it is putting off some shoppers coming in the evening.

“We are looking at issuing section 59 orders under the Police Reform Act to deal with these motorists. It was brought in for people who are driving in such a reckless manner that they cause alarm, distress or harassment to other road users.

“These boy racers are going around screeching and things like that which just isn’t on.”

A Tesco spokesperson said they are ‘working closely’ with police to tackle the problems and that their ‘priority’ is customer safety.
