Oswaldtwistle schoolchildren kicked off the week with a special assembly when Accrington Stanley players paid them a surprise visit.

Pupils at St Mary’s RC Primary School were delighted to discover footballers Michael Liddle, James Gray, Will Hatfield and Luke Clark were the special guests in their morning assembly.

The players dropped in as part of an ongoing campaign to encourage Hyndburn’s youngsters to get behind their local team.

The players were grilled by pupils on their training regimes, diet and lifestyle during a question and answer session, before posing for photographs and signing autographs.

The players then had an impromptu kickabout with the school’s Year 6 pupils.

Headteacher Lesley Pemberton said the visit was a real treat.

She said: “The visit was fantastic as the players are role models for the children.

“They conducted themselves admirably and took time with the children.”

Every St Mary’s pupil received a free ticket to Accrington Stanley’s next home match, as well as discounted entry vouchers for accompanying adults.

Stanley boss Leam Richardson has called for the town to

get behind the club, calling

the crowd the ‘12th man’ and stressing the impact of a vocal home crowd to spur the team on.
