STANLEY striker Paul Mullin scored a blow for sensible drinking when he launched a hard-hitting alcohol awareness campaign at the club’s ground on Monday.

The campaign, Know When to Say When, is being run by the East Lancashire Primary Care Trust as part of its pledge to save a million years of life by 2011.

It uses shock posters designed to make an impact on young people with themes such as unwanted teenage pregnancy and how alcohol can ruin your looks.

There will be extensive press, radio and billboard publicity, as well as on taxis and buses, and residents will also receive a leaflet rhough their letter boxes.

PCT staff will also be running a portable street pub, The Watering Hole, from which free bottles of water and information leaflets will be distributed.

Its chairman Kathy Reade said: “Excessive drinking across all age groups and all social classes is one of the biggest issues we face today.

“Not only does it lead to life-threatening illnesses, it contributes to devastating social issues including violence, road accidents and teenage pregnancy.

“Our campaign is intentionally hard-hitting becaue we want to bring it home to people that alcohol abuse wrecks lives.”
