Residents evacuated their homes after a motorist veered into a house and knocked a gas pipe off the wall last night.

Police said the male driver suffered cramp at the wheel which caused the car to collide with the house on New Lane, Oswaldtwistle, at around 7.45pm.

Firefighters ensured residents evacuated two houses due to the gas leak.

Staff from National Grid were also called to the scene.

A police spokeswoman said the man was released from his car and taken to hospital for a check-up.

She added: "The driver had cramp which caused the crash. He's fine now."

New Lane was closed for around one hour while until the area was deemed safe.
