A Candlelit service will be held to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

People in Hyndburn are being invited to attend the ‘Lights Out’ event at the Accrington Pals Memorial on Church Street in Accrington on Monday, August 4 at 10pm.

It is part of a national day of remembrance organised by the Royal British Legion for individuals, households and companies to come together and reflect on the Pals sacrifices.

They are encouraging everyone in the UK to turn off their lights on the day between 10pm and 11pm – leaving only a single light or candle on as a symbolic act of reflection and hope.

The Accrington Royal British Legion, with help from the Accrington Pals Centenary Working group, will be lighting candles as a mark of remembrance and respect.

Several members of Accrington Pipe band and the British Legion Standard Bearers will be in attendance.

Michael Hughes, of Accrington British Legion, said: “We’d like as many as possible to come and join us. Please show your support, even if only for a few minutes to light a candle and remember the past.”

A vigil will be held at Altham St James Church to mark the First World War centenary on Monday, August 4 between 7pm and 11pm.

A commemoration service will also take place at Accrington train station on Wednesday, August 6 at 10.50am.

Rev Richard Cook, who will lead the service, said it aims to honour the sacrifices of train workers in the conflict.
