A secondary school in Oswaldtwistle is planning a week of celebrations in honour of its 80th anniversary.

Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School is marking the occasion by inviting past pupils to get involved by sharing their memories of their time at the Haworth Street school, originally known as Accrington Secondary Tech.

Current students will be piecing together the school’s history in their lessons by creating displays and learning about what life was like for students in each decade.

A week of events and activities is being planned in May.

Year 10 leader Amanda Greenwood, part of the team coordinating the festivities, urged members of the community to get involved.

She said: “We have students here now whose parents and grandparents attended Rhyddings, and this shows real faith and trust in the school.

“It’s about recognising this and also the achievements of all our past students and staff.

“We look forward to inviting anyone who has passed through the school in the last 80 years to work with us on the celebrations and to also come into the school and see what Rhyddings is like today.”

The celebration will culminate in a street party, with former students and members of the community invited to see the school as it is now and what pupils have discovered about the school’s past.

Anyone with photos or memories they would like to share or who wants to get involved can contact the school on 01254 231051 or emailsmalleya@rhyddings.co.uk .
