A Rishton couple are celebrating after scooping a £3.5 million in last weekend's Lotto Rollover.

Geoff, 61, and Hilary Bennette, 54, are now planning how to spend their new found fortune with globe-trotting travel and a Mini Cooper topping the shopping list.

The couple bought their winning 'lucky dip' ticket at Accrington's Tesco Extra store on Eagle Street.

Geoff said: "We love to travel – we went to Australia a few years ago so it would be great to go back and see more of the country and visit New Zealand at the same time. Canada and the USA are also on our list so we’ll definitely use some of the win to plan a few trips."

Geoff, who retired last year after 20 years as a school governor, is also looking to buy a newer version of his first ever car – a Mini Cooper.

The couple discovered their good fortune when Geoff checked their numbers on Ceefax at 8am on Sunday.

He said: "I saw all of our six numbers on the screen and just stared at them in amazement. Hilary was still asleep so I ran upstairs and woke her up so she could double check the numbers. She came down and we both just stared at the TV and then each other for ages.

"I had already promised to help out at a local sporting event on Sunday and I didn’t want to let them down so we just told immediate family the news and I went along to the event as planned.

"I didn’t say anything to anyone at the event but it was very strange giving race commentary over the microphone as if everything was normal but deep down knowing we’d won £3.5 million.

"I managed to keep the news to myself all day but Hilary and I celebrated with a bottle of champagne when I got home that night before calling Camelot first thing on Monday morning."

Geoff and Hilary have three grown-up children and have lived in the Hyndburn area for more than 20 years. But after their big win they may move to the seaside once Hilary retires from her job as a nursery school teacher.

Geoff said: "Hilary is close to retirement so the win has come at a great time. We haven’t given it much thought but it would be lovely to live near the coast perhaps."

Peter Millar, manager of the seven-month-old Accrington Tesco Extra, said: "Who knows maybe we've got the midas touch. To have a lottery winner so soon after opening is unbelievable.

"Now we're just trying to find out who sold the winning ticket, whoever it was will be very popular with other customers buying their tickets, I'm sure.

"I'm going to have to place a lucky dip myself and hope lightning can strike twice."
