An Accrington school choir will be teaming up with the award-winning Blackburn People’s Choir to sing in aid of a landmine clearance charity.

The ‘Mags for MAG’ event will mark the climax of a project during which St Mary Magdalen’s schoolchildren have been learning about the work carried out by MAG (Mines Advisory Group) in places such as Vietnam, Cambodia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Every day thousands of ordinary civilians trying to recover from, or survive, war are being hurt or killed by leftover bombs, landmines and weapons.

The children will be creating digital presentations and recording radio plays, some of which will be presented at the event. They will also be creating posters, writing invitations and making cakes to be sold on the night.

Event organiser Katherine Palmer, Year 4 teacher, said: “We thought this would be a great way of spreading the word about MAG in a positive way, arranging an event where people can have fun but still feel like they are helping a really important cause.”

The event is at St Mary Magdalen’s church on Devonshire Street, on Friday, May 21, starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets can be purchased from the school office, or by calling during school hours on 01254 232329. Entry donations can also be made on the night.
