DETECTIVES investigating false claims that pornographic material was stored on a primary school's computer have traced the person who made the allegation.

Officers from Accrington CID visited Heathland College, on Sandy Lane, Accrington, two weeks ago after the claims were made in an anonymous letter. They took away one computer terminal for examination but confirmed last week that no illegal images had been found.

Another investigation was then launched to trace the author of the letter with a view to bringing charges of wasting police time, and he was tracked down this week.

Mrs Jacquie Hide, vice-principal at the school, said that they were relieved to be able to draw a line under the matter.

She said: "It was very difficult having this hanging over us and we're delighted with the speed of the police's inquiry. They were very supportive and kept us informed throughout. We're very pleased with the outcome and as far as we're concerned, that's an end to it. We just want to put it behind us now."

DS Paul Murphy, of Accrington CID, confirmed that the writer - who is from the Accrington area - had been given a warning by police, but no further action would be taken.

He said: "The anonymous author of the letter has now been traced and warned as to his future conduct. A decision has been made not to formally prosecute the person in this case and the matter is now closed."
