A GRANDMOTHER has called for urgent action over a manhole which is spewing out smelly sewage and toilet paper onto a road outside her house.
Sales assistant Sandra Thorpe, of Devonshire Drive, Clayton-le-Moors, said the problem started about two weeks ago and she is concerned about young children playing near the foul mess.
She said: "The fluid is bubbling out of the manhole and there is toilet paper on the road, it smells terrible and it's dangerous. This is a housing estate and there are children playing nearby.
"The liquid dries up but then it starts to bubble out of the manhole again, it's been coming up quite often over the course of a week."
Mrs Thorpe, 51, said she didn't believe that anyone had been out to inspect the problem despite the fact she had reported it.
A spokesman from United Utilities confirmed that the company was not in charge of the sewer.
Nigel Fenton, head of neighbourhood management at Hyndburn Homes, said: "We are investigating the cause of the leak on Devonshire Drive and are in the process of cleaning it up. However at this stage we are not sure what has caused it or who is responsible for sorting it out, but we thought it was important to get it dealt with as soon as possible for local residents."
An engineer had been out to inspect the manhole on Tuesday afternoon.
