The sister of Monkees star Davy Jones says she has been overwhelmed with the support from friends and fans following his death.

Hazel Wilkinson, 74, of Church, said fans have been contacting her from around the world to share their memories.

Davy  died of a heart attack on February 29 at his home in Florida.

He  was cremated after a private family service in Florida last week, but Hazel, who lives on Cranbourne Drive, instead attended a larger family service at the star’s former home church in Openshaw last weekend.

Around 70 people attended this service and Hazel said: “The church was where we all grew up and was where it all kind of began.  It was completely full. It was a low-key service.  We all sang Daydream Believer at the end which was very emotional. After the service we had a celebration of his life.

“My niece Beverly made a slideshow with family photos and wedding pictures which was played.

“All of the family brought along their favourite photos and records so there was a table full of everyone’s memories.”

She added: “His death was so unexpected. I’ve had dozens of letters and cards from all over the world.

“His fan club is absolutely devastated.

“It has been a big shock to everyone. We haven’t decided on a public memorial yet but something may happen.”

Hazel said some of her favourite memories of her brother included his many visits to Hyndburn.

“He last visited the borough last year when he was touring the UK.

She said: “When he came here he would walk around town and Accrington Market. He was just at home here.

“I used to speak to him every week or every other week just to update him on family things and what was happening over here.

“My son Robert and I also attended all of his concerts in the region last year while he was touring over here.”
