Soldiers from the 1st Battalion Scots Guards visited Accrington and Rossendale College to give students and local school pupils a taste of military life.

Visitors to the Army Careers Day were given a chance to speak to serving soldiers and see what army life is like.

Chris Ashworth, course leader for AccRoss’ Military Academy, said the event was organised to inform Year 10 and 11 pupils about the ‘tremendous range of job and career opportunities’ in the army.

Around 80 students from eight different schools attended the day, which was held in partnership with the Scots Guards and Preston Army Careers Information Office.

Chris said: “The day was a complete success. AccRoss Military Academy provides training for young people aged 16 and over who are interested in pursuing a career in the Armed Forces.

“We are especially grateful for the excellent links and relationship we enjoy with the Army careers service and the 1st Battalion Scots Guards, who travelled to Accrington from both Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire and Edinburgh Castle in Scotland.”

Trained soldiers were on hand to give demonstrations on various weapons, rifles and machine guns as well as explaining the different career options within the armed forces.

Guardsman McGovern said “It was great to come and explain some of tasks that are carried out on a daily basis by soldiers.

“Some of the learners were really interested in not only the weapons that were on show, but the different career options available within the Army.” Accrington and Rossendale College are now recruiting for an intensive 17-week military preparation course running from February to June 2015 and for the first course of 2015-16 in September.
