It's business as usual for Accrington’s famous Carnival – despite its main sponsor pulling out.
This year’s event, being organised by the Accrington Lions suffered a blow when it was revealed the North Lancs Training Group (NLTG) would not be sponsoring it.
But the Lions say they are undeterred and have vowed it will go ahead as usual on Saturday, June 18.
Tony Clarkson, carnival procession co-ordinator for the Accrington Lions, said: "It’s sad that an organisation like NLTG which has supported us for a number of years has taken this decision.
"We will carry on and do without them. We pay for bands and majorettes and other groups to play on the day, so the sponsorship is to cover things like that.
"We already have sufficient funds within the Lions to be able to go ahead, but we are still looking for sponsorship for people to get involved.
"They could be the main sponsor or they could sponsor something specific, for example some of the entertainment they have."
Since then, the Lions have already found a supporter in the form of Sharp Estate Agents and Lettings in Accrington – which has agreed to sponsor the Accrington Pipe Band.
Tony said: "We have had problems with the short-fall, but luckily the firm said they wouldn’t see that happen so they said they were willing to back us."
The hugely-popular event is one of the biggest in Hyndburn’s social calendar and has attracted up to 8,000 visitors.
It always sees colourful floats parading through the streets of the town and a chance for everyone to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy some family-friendly fun.
Money raised from the event will be donated to local charities, and with the Olympics just around the corner, fitness sport and leisure will be the theme of the event.
No one at the NLTG was available for comment as the Observer went to press.
