Talented sports pupils have won gold medals after competing in a borough inter-school competition.

A dozen students from years three and four at Rishton St Charles primary school took part in the Hyndburn Athletics Quad at Wilsons Playing Fields.

They were tasked with competing against 10 other schools in two track and two field events including the javelin, long jump, 70m sprint and a 400m run.

Rachael Gavin, a teacher at St Charles, said their youngsters came first overall and received gold medals.

She said: “They all took part in each event and at the end they collated all the results together and our school came first with the most points.

“We didn’t think we would get gold but we knew we had a high standard of applicants from what we do in school.

“They have done really well and we are really proud of them.

“The children were really made up and were walking around school for the rest of the day with their gold medals.

“There’s a real buzz about sport in the school and they are really keen to do it and join other clubs.”
