A TEENAGER woke up from a snooze and found a snake slithering around his bedroom floor.

Jack Parker, of Meadoway, Church, woke up from an afternoon nap shortly after 6pm on Tuesday and heard a noise behind a piece of furniture.

The 18-year-old said: "When I woke up I heard some rustling. At first I thought it was a carrier bag or something. I got out of bed and walked over to the chest of drawers. I looked around them and I could see the body of a small black snake."

All Jack could see was the snake's body as it was curled up.

Jack rang his father Michael McKenna, 47, who wasn't totally convinced it was a snake his son had seen. Michael said: "When he rang me I thought it was maybe a large worm or something. I really didn't think a snake had gotten into the house."

But when Michael had a look for himself, he discovered it was indeed a snake. Jack said: "It didn't seem harmful but you never know with these things. It was hissing and spitting so it was clearly upset."

They rang 999 and moved the drawers so the animal had a bit more space. An RSCPA officer arrived at the house shortly after 7pm to collect the snake.

The officer was not sure what type of snake it was but said an investigation would be carried out. Jack, who has only seen snakes at zoos, said he didn't think any of his neighbours had a pet snake but he was pretty sure the animal could not have come from very far away.

He added: "I am sure it was a pet snake that just got out or something. Still it was a shock and not something I expected at all."
