A DISGRACED former Accrington Stanley mascot has been arrested at Manchester Airport and charged with breaches of sex offender regulations.

Alan Anumm, who changed his name from Alan Smith by deed poll in May 2008, faces allegations of failing to notify police of the name change and failing to notify police seven days in advance of a journey to Thailand last November.

Smith pleaded guilty to the first offence and not guilty to the second.

He was sent to Preston Crown Court by Blackburn magistrates and will be sentenced for the first offence at the conclusion of the trial.

Anumm, 54, of Bolton Road, Blackburn, and formerly of Carter Street, Accrington, was convicted of indecently assaulting a 14-year-old girl in 2005.

He was jailed for six months and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for seven years.

At the time he was the Accrington Stanley mascot, Stan the Monkey.

In 2006 he was detained in Thailand after being found working at a school near the capital Bangkok and he was eventually deported, leaving behind his Thai wife Pach, 26.

He returned to Thailand on 28 November, travelling under his new name, and was arrested on his return to Manchester Airport last Wednesday.
