Stanley's big day proved to be a real money-spinner for the club.

Managing director Rob Heys said: "It was a fantastic day for both the club and the town. It was good to have so many people in the ground and people all over the country watching Accrington Stanley. We took in £200,000 from Sky for the game. We never budget for cup runs so any money coming in like this is an absolute bonus.

"We’ll use the money to improve aspects of the ground and squad in terms of giving John a little bit extra to spend."

He added that he was proud of Stanley’s performance in front of a near sellout crowd at the Crown Ground.

"I didn’t come away disappointed. If we’d been outplayed and outclassed we’d have held our hands up, but we came so close. The lads did Accrington Stanley proud."

However, the end of the game saw five arrests as Stanley fans clashed with police.

Fans in the Clayton end stayed on after the game singing songs, but the atmosphere turned sour as police moved to arrest one fan. Fighting broke out on the terraces, resulting in the five arrests.

A police spokeswoman said: "It had been a wonderful occasion held in really good spirits and enjoyed by the majority of fans, which became marred by a small group of people who became hostile towards the police following the arrest of a fan."

Three more fans were arrested during the game for encroaching on to the pitch.

Rob Heys said: "There was an isolated incident at the end and we’ll deal with it, but I wouldn’t want it to take anything away from what was a fantastic evening."
