The timing of an Accrington Stanley share issue has been questioned, following staff cutbacks.

The Reds launched the issue of 9,999 shares, price £100 each, at Wednesday night's cup game with Tranmere.

There have been cuts in working hours among the office staff at the Crown Ground.

The first shares will be issued on Friday, October 21 at the club’s home game against Cheltenham Town, with an official press conference in the Sports Bar before the match.

Chairman Ilyas Khan, who saved the club in November 2009, says the share issue will safeguard the club's financial future and potentially raise funds for a new ground.

He said: "Accrington is one of England’s best loved and most historic footballing towns - it was one of the twelve founders of the football league in 1888 and has phenomenal support worldwide.

"To own a share in Stanley is to own a piece of real football history - shareholders will be making a direct contribution to the future of Accrington Stanley.

"It would make the perfect Christmas present for Stanley fans everywhere."

Reds fan Carl Steen already owns a share in the club, having paid £250 under the previous Save Our Stanley (SOS) scheme.

He said fans were not sure what was going on.

He claimed: "We have heard they have had a few redundancies and then last night they were advertising the shares during the game. I will probably come round and buy a share, but I think it was a bit too soon.

"I’ve not heard anything about my share. They were £250 but now I don’t know if they count or not."

Club bosses say the 74 SOS shareholders paid £250 for a package which included a £10 B share.

The new shareholders will pay £100 for a C share. Both shares will entitle holders to one vote at the AGM.

Stanley general manager Robert Houseman said:

"They paid £250 for a package which included 10 free tickets, a signed special shirt which was framed and framed certificate and it included the share. The share was a £10 share. The latest share issue has been part of a timeline which started at the AGM back in August."
