Hundreds of items have been rolling in for the Accrington Lions Toy Appeal, supported by the Observer.

The appeal is aimed at giving poor children across Hyndburn a happy Christmas by making sure they have something to open on December 25.

And we still need your help to make this a special Christmas for disadvantaged youngsters across the borough.

The Lions have been running their toy appeal for many years and it is always a familiar part of the run-up to Christmas in Hyndburn for many people.

Peter Hopwood, chairman of the Welfare Committee, said: "It’s been going very well and we’ve had plenty of stuff coming in for it.

"The other day, I went over to Grindleton as someone there had heard about the appeal and I came back with a car-load of stuff.

"We’ve had about 15 board games and then smaller things like little cars, so we’ve probably had about 100 from that collection alone.

"But we still need people’s help and we really appreciate all the help we get. We’ve also got some toy services coming up at several churches and we usually get some car-loads of items from them."

In the past, some people have been so keen to help the appeal that they have even gone out and bought new toys, just to have something to give.

Last year, a list of 140 children was drawn up, with each child invited down to choose around five or six presents each.

The Lions make sure all the items are in tip-top shape before giving them out, even checking batteries on toys to make sure they work properly.

If you would like to bolster the appeal, you can bring items to the collection point at Sue’s Shoe Repairs on 12 Little Blackburn Road, Accrington.

If transport is a problem, ring Peter on 01254 383926 – and please do not send soft toys.

You can also drop off toys at our office at Accrington Market Hall.
