More than twenty participants slogged it out in a battle of strength and endurance at the Victoria Hotel on Sunday, September 7.

An estimated 350 spectators watched the strongmen battle for supremacy over six different events in The Great Harwood Novice Strongman Classic.

The gruelling challenges included the farmer’s walk which involves carrying 100 kg in each hand over a 20 metre course.

A 200 kg sled drag and a 10kg’ viking sword’ hold were among the other events.

Great Harwood strongmen Adam McCann and Gavin Theaker finished in tenth and eleventh places respectively.

The top three competitors, Greg Dunnings, Andy Robinson and Dave Thornton received trophies and prizes presented by strongman Mark Felix.

Grenada-born Mark moved to Great Harwood when he was 23 and is a regular entrant in the Word’s Strongest Man competition, as well as a winner of several international grip contests.

The event was organised and refereed by Stan Brydon of Great Harwood Gym on Hesketh Street who plans to hold the event again next year.

Stan said: “The event went really well, it was a very good competition.”

The next strongman contest will be held at the Great Harwood Agricultural Show over the May Bank Holiday weekend next year.
