Students have been celebrating an A Level first for the borough. Pupils at Accrington Academy and St Christopher’s C of E School have recorded both school’s first full set of A Level results.
It is the first time that students have been able to study for the qualification in the borough in recent years.
Alasdair Coates, headteacher of St Christopher’s, said 99 per cent of the school’s A-Levels were pass grades and 78 per cent of them at grades A* to C.
He added: "We are delighted that the hard work of so many students and staff has been rewarded.
"This is the first of recent years in which Accrington has had a centre of its own offering a full range of A-Levels. Through St Christopher’s Sixth Form many local youngsters have gained places in some of the most prestigious academic universities in the land."
Burnley College was celebrating another "outstanding year of achievements" with a 99.8 per cent pass rate, a record number of A and A* grades and over three-quarters achieving top grades.
Among the College’s highest performing students from Accrington was former St Christopher’s student Damon Bannister, who achieved top A grades in Information Communication Technology, Film Studies and Media Studies. He will now study Media Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University. Former Accrington Academy student Freddie Shaw also secured top grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Government and Politics. He will now study a Maths degree at the University of Birmingham. Former Mount Carmel High School student Rebecca Smith achieved top grades in her A Levels in Biology, Mathematics, Sport and Law. She will now study Accounting and Finance at the University of Newcastle.
Hugh Bramwell, sixth form centre principal of Burnley College, said it was the best ever year overall. He added: "We are passionate about the success of all of our students and are delighted that so many of them secured their futures with us.
"Our students’ dedication and commitment to their education has led to them being amongst the highest achievers in Lancashire. The outstanding results we are celebrating today are a credit to the hard work and determination of our students, the support of their parents and a tribute to our highly qualified teaching and support staff.
"A record number of our students have now secured places at some of the country’s top universities and we wish all of our students every success in their future university studies and employment plans."
