A cow that went for a swim was rescued from a canal by more than 20 firefighters yesterday.

The animal became stuck in a stretch of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal after straying from a field in Altham and going for a dip.

A special urban search and rescue appliance from Leyland, two fire engines and one water rescue pump were sent to the scene on Sunday, June 26.

Hyndburn crew manager Alex Fletcher said: "It was a rescue involving some of our specially trained firefighters who know how to rescue large animals.

"The cow had gone for a swim and got stuck. They had some winching equipment but didn't need to use it as they walked it out before it returned to the field."

The rescue occurred near Altham Lane, Altham at 2pm on Sunday.
