A TEENAGE boy who was travelling in the boot of a car is still in a critical condition in hospital after suffering serious head injuries when the car collided with a wall.

Lee Bennison, 16, of Clayton-le-Moors, was one of six people in the car when it left the road at 10pm on Friday night near to the Crown Pub, on Whalley Road, Accrington.

The 19-year-old driver of the car, also believed to be from Clayton-le-Moors, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving but later released on police bail pending further investigations.

PC Simon Bolton, officer in charge of the incident, said that Mr Bennison, who was not strapped into a seat, was thrown about in the back of the vehicle when the driver lost control. He was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

PC Bolton said: "The road had to be closed for almost three hours. It was carnage when we arrived. The front passenger was unconscious and the others were walking wounded."
