IT RAINED and it poured but the inclement weather didn't stop more than 4,000 people turning out to take part in the 140th annual Great Harwood Show.
The heavens opened in the afternoon and the Wood Street show ground turned white following a treacherous hail storm, forcing many people to head home early.
Throughout the day children, parents and grandparents packed into the ground for what could possibly be the last time. Next year, organisers are hoping to move to a larger venue as more space is needed for all the extra attractions.
Due to the recent threat of avian flu in Wales, the poultry section had to be cancelled and the best eggs competition went ahead instead.
In the horse section, the working hunter category was cancelled because the poor weather had made the ground unsafe. Andalucian stallions with riders dressed in Spanish flamenco costume entertained the crowd in the main arena with three home bred horses which have been handled, trained and ridden by the owner's three daughters who are 17, 18 and 19.
The retired Lancashire Police Dogs Benevolent Fund demonstration proved to be a big hit with handlers displaying remarkable obedience and protection skills and many stalls and fairground attractions ensured the youngsters were entertained.
The Blackburn Panthers cheerleading squad fought against the elements to perform for the drenched crowd and the usual charity stalls were represented around the ground.
Show secretary Rona Westwell said: "This year's show went really well. After the terrible weather we had last year the crowd numbers were still up so it's nice to see people coming back again. Fortunately the worst of the weather was later in the afternoon by which time most people had packed up so it didn't spoil the show at all."
