Thousands will line the streets this Saturday, June 18, with the arrival of the famous Accrington Carnival.

This year’s event will see special guest Jeff Hordley, better known as Cain Dingle from Emmerdale riding with the procession.

And as always, there will be a whole host of colourful events for all the family to enjoy.

Tracy Simmonds, carnival organiser for the Accrington Lions said: “We hope everyone comes along and enjoys themselves and comes out to support the event.

“The carnival is one of the biggest events in Accrington’s social calendar which is held every two years and we hope everyone will have a good time.

“All the money raised will go into the local community, so please support the carnival and the Accrington Lions.”

The morning parade and procession will begin at 10.45am at Thorneyholme Road, Accrington, passing through Queen’s Road, Whalley Road, Abbey Street, Plantation Street and finishing at Park Street, Accrington.

Newly-crowned Carnival Queen Megan Lucie Adams and Carnival Princess Jasmine Baron will be there on the day.

The theme of this year’s event is sport, fitness and leisure, and there will be many events during the day.

Tracy said: “We have got it confirmed that Graham Jones, Hyndburn’s MP will be attending as well.

“This year, we won’t go in front of Accrington Town Hall, instead the main podium will be at the top end of Broadway, joining with Whalley Road, across from the Broadway pub.”

There will be a Hyndburn’s Got Talent contest which will be on the main stage during the afternoon.  A prize of £100 goes to the winner – and the finals will be judged by Jeff Hordley.

The finals of the football competition will be held, including the boys under 11s and under 13s as well as the girls under 12s. A charity football match will be held mid-way through the afternoon, featuring the Accrington Stanley XI including manager John Coleman and assistant manager Jimmy Bell.  There will also be a penalty shoot-out competition, craft stalls, grand charity raffle, owls and birds of prey display, dance displays, body combat, face painting, clowns and a magician.

All events are at Accrington and Rossendale College campus on Sandy Lane, Accrington.  There will also be a fun fair on Friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18, from 6pm on the Sandy Lane site car park - all rides are £1.

Admission to the events is £2.50, gates open at 11am.
