AN ACCRINGTON primary school has been praised for its work in science.

St Anne’s and St Joseph’s got top marks from a Government Ofted inspector who visited the school last month.

He found that standards in the subject were high and achievement outstanding.

A large proportion of children reached national expectations at the end of key stages in Years Two and Six and a significant number (51 per cent and 31 per cent respectively) achieved the highest levels.

The quality of teaching was described as good, with lessons being carefully planned and a great deal of attention paid to health and safety.

The quality of the curriculum was also judged to be good, with the school showing a creative approach, and the quality of leadership and management in the subject was deemed outstanding.

The inspector notes that all children’s contributions are valued, there is support and encouragement at all levels and, contrary to the national picture, boys perform well.

The only suggestion for improvement is to develop the quality of investigative science.
