A HUNCOAT tot diagnosed with leukaemia has received an award for his bravery.

Four-year-old Rieli Biggins, of Sedum Gardens, in Huncoat, will receive a Little Star Award for his courage since falling ill neary a year ago.

Rieli was nominated by mum Jade Flood after the Peel Park Primary School youngster became ill in January 2008.

She discovered Rieli was ill when she was pregnant with Lexia, who turns one today (Friday)

Jade said: "I was heartbroken when Rieli was diagnosed with leukaemia.

"I allowed myself to cry just the once and then put on a brave face for Rieli.

"As I’d just found out I was pregnant, it was a difficult time all round.

"Rieli has been incredibly brave through the toughest of times and we are very proud of him."

This week Rieli and his mum have been enjoying a special trip to Lapland to meet Father Christmas, thanks to the Wish upon a Star Foudnation.

His Auntie Joanne Flood admits the last few months have been tough but remains confident that Rieli will make a full recovery.

She said: "I spoke to Jade just after they landed and she said he was really excited about meeting Father Christmas.

"Rieli has been in hospital with swine flu and bronchitis recently, but he is now over those and continuing on with his cancer treatment. We are hopeful he will make a full recovery."

Rieli was diagnosed with leukaemia after he unable to shake-off a cold and felt constantly tired.

A blood test revealed he had leukaemia and he was immediately admitted to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for four weeks of intensive chemotherapy treatment.

He will continue to receive treatment until 2011.

His mum gives him chemotherapy treatment orally each day at home and he undergoes intravenous treatment monthly in hospital, as well as a lumbar puncture every three months and regular bone marrow tests.

Jane Bullock, Cancer Research UK’s spokeswoman for Lancashire, said: "Rieli is a true ‘Little Star’ who richly deserves this accolade."
