TRAINS were stopped and traffic was redirected when a road was closed for five hours after a wagon got stuck under a bridge.

The incident took place around midday on Tuesday when the vehicle, owned by tallow manufacturers Ashworths Products, got stuck while driving along a stretch of Blackburn Road near Church.

Cars were diverted through Oswaldtwistle and trains were stopped from crossing the bridge for more than an hour while engineers checked for structural damage.

PC Walter Greenwood, of Accrington Traffic Police, said: "Fortunately, no-one was hurt and we managed to avoid the rush-hour traffic, so it could have been worse.

"The extension arms on the vehicle may have got stuck in the bridge, but we are not sure."

The police will submit a report to the Crown Prosecution Service to determine whether any legal action will be taken against Ashworths. The firm, based on Bridge Street, Church, declined to comment.
