Three fundraisers have set off on a drive of more than 3,000 miles across Europe in an old Volvo to raise money for a children’s charity.

Garage owner Ian Gregg, 46, has been joined by mechanics Paul Heys, 35, and Kevin Watson, 36, during the Scumrun rally.

The team will take their 16-year-old car to various locations across the continent racing against 100 different UK teams.

The mechanics, who all work at the Auto-fix garage in Accrington, will spend five days in the confines of their rally car, which cost less than £500 to buy and prepare for the race.

Mechanic Kevin said the toughest part of the challenge will be driving up to 700 miles to a different European location each day. He said: “It will be quite tough but we’ve worked together for many years so we should be okay. We’ll be sleeping in separate tents though - I don’t want to get too close!”

The three friends, who will be dressed as the Three Amigos during their trip, are hoping to raise at least £500 for Well Child.

The team was due to set off to cross the channel from Dover on Thursday, May 2 and return to British shores on Monday, May 6.
