A predicted invasion of giant spiders appears to have arrived with one home in Clayton-le-Moors hit by two huge arachnids in the space of just a couple of days.

Joe Lindsay, 21, has spotted two monstrous spiders in his home in the past few days, catching the first one in a glass before his dog ate the second.

Joe said: “I was getting in to bed when I spotted the first one.

“It was on the wall and I shouted to my mum to come and see it. Next thing I know it had jumped in to my coat and I thought it was going to put it on and walk out of the door!”

I managed to get it in a glass and threw it out of the window.”

Joe, who works for BT as customer service advisor, said another huge spider interrupted a family night in on Sunday night.

The former Accrington Moorhead Sports College pupil said: “We were all playing Monopoly when it was spotted running across the floor.

“All my family were round and most of them ran out of the room. It ran under a cabinet which me and my brother moved before my dog ran at it and ate it.”

The species of either spider is unknown although they were likely to be Eratigena atricas, otherwise known as giant house spiders; the species that are taking over our homes this autumn as they search for a mate.

Experts have predicted an increase in giant spiders in our homes following the hot, wet summer. The spiders enter homes through open windows and doors.
