A motorist smashed through the central barriers of the M65 motorway and collided with a Tesco delivery van travelling in the opposite direction after swerving to avoid a loose wheel.
There were no serious injuries during the incident that happened at 5.20pm between junction 5 and 6 on Thursday, February 23.
Hyndburn firefigher Phil Whittaker said the male drivers of the saloon car and Tesco van, both in their 40s, were taken to hospital – one suffering whiplash and the other a fractured collarbone.
Watch manager Whittaker said: "A vehicle pulling a trailer was travelling eastbound towards Accrington on the M65 when a wheel came off causing the driver behind it to swerve into the central barriers and then collide with an oncoming Tesco van.
"We went straight to the scene and ended up making sure things were safe and helped paramedics load the men into the ambulance so they could be taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital."
He added: "The accident was quite extensive so they were lucky to avoid more serious injuries."
The motorway closed in both directions for 15 minutes causing tailbacks.
