Accrington's iconic railway viaduct has been chosen as the landmark to represent the borough on the Observer masthead.

There was a cracking online response to the poll by our readers, with 376 votes cast on our website.

The memorable viaduct emerged triumphant in an extremely tight contest, with 40.2 per cent of the vote.

Gothic House came second with a strong 39.1 per cent.

Accrington Town Hall (12.8 per cent) was third, with the market hall back in fourth place with 8.0 per cent.

The viaduct, which forms part of the town centre conservation area, will now be carried at the top of the front page of the Observer every week.

We would like to thank everyone who voted in the poll for casting their preferences.

Editor’s comment: The final results had to be recalculated after it was discovered that a number of votes for Gothic House had been cast by the same person, which was against the competition rules.
