Thugs smashed a man in the face with a metal bar this morning before stealing his jewellery.

The 37-year-old answered his flat door on Edgar Street at 7.15am to two men who said they were asking for help.

The pair then unleashed a metal bar and struck the man in the face before forcing entry and punching him.

Police said several items of jewellery were robbed from the man as he lay on the floor in his flat in Empire House, Accrington.

DC Helen Mercer, of Accrington CID, said: "This was a nasty robbery. We don't know how much the jewellery was worth but a lot was taken. The victim suffered bruises and scrapes and has been released from hospital after being checked out."

Both of the robbers are described as white males. The first was 5ft 8 with a stocky build, dark brown shaven hair, wearing a light coloured jacket and in his mid 30s.

The second man had an average to stocky build, 5ft 10, with dark / red hair with shaven sides and longer on top and in his mid 20s.
