SIXTY Accrington Stanley fans were the winners on Sunday after walking 18 miles from the Fraser Eagle Stadium to Rochdale FC.

Steve Lowe and John Timmins avoided blisters and sore feet to lead the way through Haslingden and over Owd Betts from 7.30am to arrive at the Spotland stadium in time for a quick drink and the 2pm kick-off.

Unfortunately, Stanley lost 4-1 but the fans had their own goals – to raise money for two charities.

One was the Observer’s Aspire Appeal and another was a charity to help build a school in Nepal.

"We haven’t got the final total yet but it should be considerable," said organiser Steve Lowe, with the walkers raising £150 each on average.

"We hope to have the grand total next week and, even though the football was forgettable, everyone said how much they had enjoyed it and how good it was to do something together.

"We were all exhausted but we are already planning what to do next year."
