Police are hunting a man who punched a woman as she walked to catch her bus home in Accrington town centre - so he could steal £4.

The 37-year-old woman was about to board her bus home to Burnley after work when the assault took place.

Police described the robbery on Monday at 7pm as 'out of the blue' and said the victim was left with facial injuries.

DS Paul Langley, of Accrington CID, said: “The woman had finished work and was on her way to the bus station on Peel Street.

“She was walking between the market and Wilkinsons when she was a approached by a male from behind who demanded her bag. He has taken hold of the bag and when she turned round he punched her in the face, grabbed her bag then ran off towards Little Blackburn Road.”

DS Langley added: “The lady suffered bruises to her left cheek where she was hit and has been left shaken up and distressed. It was an attack completely out of the blue on a lovely evening.

“It has been witnessed by a number of people and we are keen to trace this man.”

The offender is described as an Asian male in his early 20s, with a slim to medium build, approximately six ft tall, clean shaven and with short brown hair, wearing dark clothing.

The handbag he took was later found dumped in Accrington town centre.
