A woman and a two-year-child were taken to hospital after being rescued from a burning house in the early hours.

Nine firefighters rushed to the blaze at West Crescent, Laneside, Accrington after receiving a call shortly before 1.45am today.

It is not yet known what caused the fire, which caused severe fire damage to the lounge and smoke logging throughout the ground floor.

The casualties were treated at the scene by paramedics for the effects of smoke inhalation and then taken to hospital, from where they were later discharged.

A fire service spokesman said the Hyndburn Fire Station crews used breathing apparatus and a hose reel to tackle the fire, adding: "We have not yet made an initial fire report to suggest what the cause was."
