A woman and five children escaped from a house after a cooker caught fire.

They made it out on to Dowry Street, Accrington, after the smoke alarm in the home went off at 5.30pm yesterday.

Ten firefighters tackled the fire for around 30 minutes.

A spokesman for Hyndburn Fire Station said: "Luckily the woman and five children had made it out before we got there.

"No-one was hurt. The flames ignited in the grill and the cooker was completely destroyed. And there was slight damage to the rest of the kitchen."

The two fire crews used breathing apparatus and a hose reel.
