A section of the M66 is closed following a vehicle fire and a collision.

Four vehicles were involved in the smash on the southbound carriageway which took place near junction two for Bury and Heywood at around 1.15am this morning.

The motorway was initially fully closed between junction one and three, but these have since been removed.

It remained closed at junction two where a diversion was put in place while recovery of the vehicles takes place.

All lanes fully reopened at about 7am, nearly six hours after the incident.

An investigation into the incident has been completed.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said one man was seriously injured in the collision.

He was taken to hospital for further treatment.

The collision involved a Fiat 500, Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 and a Ford Transit.

One of the vehicles caught alight during the incident.
