A man was rescued from the canal in Rishton by a passer-by.

Emergency services were called to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal near Cut Lane after a man in his early 40s was in the water.

Richard Edney, of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, said the man had been in the water for around 15 minutes before a passer-by spotted him and swam in to rescue him.

Three fire crews including a specialised team with rope rescue equipment were mobilised however by the time they arrived the man was out of the water.

A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson said the man was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment and that his injuries were not serious.

The incident happened just before midday on Friday, March 7.
