A man has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act after threatening to jump off the Accrington Arndale Centre roof.

Police were called to to the top level of the centre at around 12.45pm on Monday, November 25 and remained at the scene for nearly 45 minutes.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “We were called after concerns were raised over the safety of a man on the top of the car park.

“Officers at the scene spoke to him. He didn't jump off the side of the building. He was threatening to but he fell backwards rather than forwards and into the car park area.

“He was treated at the scene for a head injury and has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.”

The Observer exclusively revealed in September how bosses at the shopping centre were putting measures in place to help prevent suicide attempts after a coroner raised concerns over deaths at the site.

There have been four deaths caused by people plunging from the shopping centre multi-storey car park in as many years.

Hyndburn coroner Michael Singleton said he would write to the Arndale Centre's owners about taking steps to prevent further incidents following the death of 21-year-old Muniza Mehrban in June this year.

The new measures adopted included increasing patrols across the centre, staff working alongside the Samaritans charity to receive training and holding public awareness days.

New signage, provided by the Samaritans, was installed at strategic locations in the centre including the top floor car park.
