Retail giant Marks and Spencer has confirmed that its Accrington store will close in early 2016.

The store on Broadway will remain open for trading over the Christmas period and will close the day before a new store opens at New Hall Hey, Rawtenstall, the retail giant said.

Marks and Spencer made the shock announcement last December that it would cease trading at its Accrington store after 53 years.

The latest revelations rubber stamp claims made by Rossendale council’s leader Coun Alyson Barnes last month.

A spokesperson for the company said: “The decision to close our Accrington store and open a new store in Rawtenstall was not one that we took lightly.

“The new store will offer a much bigger M&S food offer and an improved shopping experience, including free parking.”

The company said its initial intention was for the Accrington store to close in spring 2015, but delays with the new 7,600 square foot site at Rawtenstall prevented that from happening.

Marks has confirmed all the staff have been offered jobs either at the new store or at alternative sites in the area.
