Marks and Spencer have confirmed no date has been set for the closure its Accrington store.

The Observer revealed in April how bosses decided to delay closing the Broadway shop from May until ‘late summer’ to tie in with the opening of the M&S Simply Food Rawtenstall store.

The high street giant made the shock announcement in December to cease trading at its Accrington store after 53 years.

Campaigners collected over 3,000 signatures against the closure calimed it could lead to the ‘slow death’ of the town centre.

An M&S spokesperson said: “I’m afraid at present we do not have a confirmed date for the opening of the Rawtenstall store, but our plans for the closure at Accrington and opening at Rawtenstall do remain the same.

“The closure of the Accrington store will coincide with the opening of the new Rawtenstall store.”

Supermarket chain Iceland have confirmed they will open their new warehouse store at 9am on Tuesday, September 8.

The frozen food giant will move into the empty unit at Eastgate Retail Park following Morrisons’ closure in March.
