Police are appealing after three masked men wielding machetes carried out a ‘terrifying’ raid on a village post office.

The offenders stormed Rising Bridge Post Office at around 11am this morning, threatening the postmistress, her husband and their son with machetes before making off with thousands of pounds in cash.

The men left the scene in a red Volvo estate type car in the direction of Roundhill Lane.

Det Insp Martin Melvin from East CID said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the postmistress and her family, but fortunately they were not injured in the ordeal.

“I would like to reassure the public that we are on with our initial inquiries including trying to identify and look through any potential CCTV that could assist us with our inquiries.

“If you witnessed anything suspicious or you know anything about this incident at all, please get in touch with us at your earliest opportunity.”

Two of the were described as wearing black tracksuit style tops and bottoms and the third man was wearing a grey tracksuit.
