Hyndburn is set to face yet another cold snap with weather warnings issued to coincide with schools returning after half term.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice for the North West of England from Friday until Monday, with temperatures just above freezing forecast for over the weekend and into next week.

Forecasters say lightning could be an additional hazard. Lancashire County Council said all priority routes in East Lancashire will be gritted from 11pm on Friday.

Snow showers are forecast on Sunday in Accrington with Saturday set to be the coldest day with the mercury hovering around freezing.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Across northern England, accumulations of snow to low levels are likely to be transient, while on hills between six and 10 centimetres of snow is possible.”

Since January, more than 6,000 tonnes of salt have been used to treat roads.

Helen Roberts from the Met Office said: “Monday is looking quite squally and blustery with some wintry showers and some snow above a few hundred metres.

“Monday’s yellow weather warning covers most of East Lancashire with frequent hail, sleet and snow showers with six to ten centimetres over higher ground.”
