The Morrisons store in Accrington will close this weekend.

The supermarket giant confirmed the final opening date for the Eastgate store is Sunday, March 29.

The Observer revealed earlier this year how Morrisons became the latest chain store to pull out of the town and is one of 10 branches to shut.

A Morrisons spokesman said: “We have looked extremely carefully at whether the store can be turned around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making it viable.”

The loss of Morrisons crowns a miserable New Year for the town’s retail offer after Marks and Spencer confirmed it was closing its flagship store in Accrington town centre.

DIY chain Homebase pulled out of the town centre last month, however discount retailer B&M confirmed it will be moving into the vacant store.
