Ford will only build 250 of its new GT this year. Of these, something like 20 will be sold to UK customers.

Not to worry, though, this is a £400,000 motor. So the demand it hardly going to be overwhelming, is it?

Ah.

In the few days that have passed since Ford’s dedicated GT configurator went live, those 250 cars have been over-subscribed by a factor of 28:1.

To save you the sums, that’s 7000 punters eager to stump up their cash for the 592bhp, 3.5-litre V6-engined supercar. If Ford were to keep on building them at the same rate, the last customer would finally take delivery in 2044.

Fortunately, the configurator is as much about letting Ford specify its customers as letting its customers specify their car. Would-be owners were asked to explain what the Ford brand means to them (interpret that as you wish…)

If you miss the cut, which is statistically likely, you will at least be able to console yourself with something like a McLaren 675LT or Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. The only problem that will leave you is deciding what to buy with all the money you’ve saved.
